Italy: drama highlights exploitation of immigrants in agriculture

The story, as sad as it is macabre, shocked the whole of Italy. Satnam Singh was an Indian immigrant, aged 31, who worked on a farm located not far from the town of Latina, in the center of the country. On Monday June 17, his arm was cut by a machine, but his employer did not call for help. He dropped Singh off in front of his home, far from his business, thus causing a possibly fatal delay in help, since the man died two days later, on Wednesday June 19.

Satnam Singh is dead, writing La Repubblica, because “he was invisible, a twice-phantom worker: since he did not have a contract, and since he did not have a residence permit”.
