In Singapore, “insects as treats” soon on plates

Sixteen species of incest are coming to Singaporean plates “from next month”, revealed the local newspaper Lianhe Zaobao. Good news “long awaited” by Ye Yaowei. “I can’t wait to taste local insect dishes,” “We are delighted to have this kind of food,” says the boss of a logistics company, who explains that when he travelled to Thailand, South Korea or Vietnam, he enjoyed it.

It was in mid-June, at a major conference in the city-state hosted by The Asian Food and Feed Insect Association, that Ye Yaowei and other attendees were delighted to learn that “permission to sell insect foods in Singapore would be granted soon”.

An exercise in patience. In 2022, the Singapore Food Agency authorized the importation and marketing for food purposes of these sixteen species of insects, including crickets, silkworm chrysalises, and grasshoppers. But implementation has dragged on ever since.
