Major labels pursue start-ups that tap into their music to feed AI



The three main music majors – Sony, Universal and Warner – file a complaint against Suno and Udio, two music artificial intelligence (AI) companies accused of “violation of copyright of their artists and labels”, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The two AIs of Suno and Udio “allow users to compose new songs using written prompts”, explains the economic daily. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said Monday June 24 that it had filed a complaint on behalf of the majors.

According to the powerful American Music Industry Association, the music created by these AIs has strange similarities with songs such as My Girlfrom The Temptations, American Idiotfrom Green Day, All I Want for Christmas, by Mariah Carey, or even songs by Chuck Berry and James Brown”.

For the majors, Suno and Udio “drew on copyrighted music from various artists, genres, and time periods to train their large generative AI language models,” relates the Los Angeles Times. “The record labels demand that Suno and Udio admit to exploiting their music libraries without permission and ask the courts to prohibit AI companies from taking their copyrighted works in the future,” continues the daily life of the coast
