Number of millionaires worldwide hits record high

Not only are there more millionaires in the world, but they are richer than ever. This is what emerges from the latest edition of the “World Wealth Report”the annual report on global wealth published by the consulting firm Capgemini.

“The proportion of people able to invest at least $1 million increased by 5.1% worldwide last year: there are approximately 22.8 million,” reports Die Zeit, who notes that, “even in Germany”, the number of millionaires has increased, “despite the economic slowdown” from the country.

The Capgemini study shows that the wealth of the richest has also increased, with total wealth estimated at some 86.8 billion dollars (79 billion euros), an increase of 4.7% compared to 2022. “In terms of number of people concerned and assets, these are records since Capgemini began publishing its annual study in 1997.”

The United States remains at the top of the list of countries with the largest number of millionaires, with just over 7.4 million wealthy individuals. “Thanks to a robust economy, moderate inflation and the stock market boom, the wealth of wealthy Americans increased by 7.2% in 2023, to $26.1 billion.”

The rise of the stock markets

Japan is in second place, with 3.7 million millionaires. Germany, in third place, has 1.6 million and China is close to taking fourth place with a total of 1.5 million millionaires.

It is mainly to the rise of the stock markets that we must attribute the increase in the number of wealthy individuals and the increase in their fortune, underlines Capgemini. “Stocks surged alongside the tech market, fueled by enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and its potential impact on the economy,” notes the consulting firm.

Last April, the ranking of the richest people in the world established by Forbes revealed for his part that the world had a total of 2,781 billionairesor 141 more than in 2022. The magazine also highlighted that two thirds of these billionaires, who together weigh some 14.2 trillion dollars, were richer than a year ago.
